Robocafe

 Robocafe - Movie Making module

Me, Ryan, Esme and Joe Murphy worked together this week.

I was on sound. Ryan Directing and editing. Esme was on lighting and Joe Murphy on Cinematography.

As always we were stuck for a Location and actors so I decided to just book out the studio. Ryan does a bit of 3d work in Blender and uses the green screen to key in digitally built sets so he decided to just make a simple futuristic Café scene. We also only had Amber as an actor so decided to make a little flying robot to confront her. The clip would be the robot telling her to put on a mask on but she doesn't have one which would end with her locked up.

I made a few plans

After watching a video about Bong Joon Ho's Parasite storyboards I took note of one of the tips. Which was to give your bad/evil characters horns. Something so simple helps out a lot.

I came up with the robot design. Thinking about how it would express emotions and the different levels of emotion. But mostly the sound. Ryan built a concept model after looking at my sketches. He came up with this:

These are the robots eyes I drew on procreate then sent to Ryan. Ryan then went on to use the image to project a light through that formed the robots eyes. Basically this layer works as a stencil.

The robots sound is a mixture of three Foley sounds:

My Fan

Air Freshener

              And.....

Shaking a polaroid proved to be perfect. With the three sounds combined I think it works well to simulate the movement of the robot.

Here's the rest of the audio

WHAT I LEARNED

When using a green screen have your subject way in front of it in order to light the screen evenly and to not cast shadows.

Give the actor something to focus their eyes on that can be easily cut out. We used a pencil for Amber to follow to make it look like the robot was there.

I organised my sound files by renaming them. A simple thing that saves loads of time.
