Five Films Five Finger Pitch / My story 'Caught out'

Deconstructing five films of my choice using the Five Finger Pitch:

1. GENRE,

2. PROTAGONIST,

3. GOAL,

4. OBSTACLE,

5. WHY THE STORY IS IMPORTANT?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My first choice is Dead Man's Shoes

GENRE: Modern Western

PROTAGONIST: Richard

GOAL: Richards goal is to (SPOILER ALERT) Avenge his brothers death.

OBSTACLE/S: Local small time gang/dealers

WHY IS THE STORY IMPORTANT?: I think it's to show the effect bullying can have and basically give the viewer a satisfying insight into Richards brutal revenge.  To me British films have a certain feel to them, a relentlessly real, cold, gritty aesthetic which is very relatable and what I like from watching a film. This story is very dark but I like the fact it has some comedic bits in which gives it an extra level of realism.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My second choice is The Shining

GENRE: Horror

PROTAGONIST: Danny

GOAL: To survive the winter in the Overlook Hotel with his mentally unstable Father.

OBSTACLE/S: Jack Torrance (his dad). The Hotel itself being in the middle of nowhere and haunted. Weather.

WHY THE STORY IS IMPORTANT?: I personally think it's more the importance of how Stanley Kubrick adapted a Steven King novel giving it some different narratives and making it aesthetically beautiful. I do like the Steven King version too but for me Kubrick's take has a more eerie feeling behind it. When you think you had it all worked out and it's just a case of "the Hotel is haunted" Jack is let out of the walk in store room by someone/something making you doubt everything. I think it's that for me. The sense of not knowing if what we're seeing is reality.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My third choice is It Follows

GENRE: Horror, Thriller

PROTAGONIST: Jay

GOAL: To understand and evade a mysterious curse

OBSTACLE: The curse, It takes the form of different people and follows her relentlessly in silence.

WHY THE STORY IS IMPORTANT?: I think it's showing how careless youth can be? I did have to read up on this one as I thought maybe it's some sort of STD? but according to Brendan Morrow of Bloody - Disgusting.com It's about life as a sexual assault victim and I think he makes a good argument for that in the attached article.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My fourth choice is Raising Arizona

GENRE: Comedy Crime

PROTAGONIST: Herbert 'Hi'

GOAL: To kidnap one baby from a rich businessman who's just had Quintuplets

OBSTACLE: Evelle and Gale Snoats (Hi's "friends" from jail that turn against him when they hear there is a reward for the baby) , Leonard Smalls (The Bounty hunter hired by the businessman)

WHY IS THE STORY IMPORTANT? Shows a lot of battles humanity has with itself morally.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My fifth choice is Mr Nobody

GENRE: Fantasy Drama

PROTAGONIST: Nemo

GOAL: To make a decision to either go with his mum or his dad

OBSTACLE: Life, the people he meets along the different paths, the consequences of his decisions, himself

WHY IS THE STORY IMPORTANT? It's important as it shows the nature of humanity and the outcomes for every choice nemo makes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Deconstructing my own script Caught Out using the five finger pitch.

GENRE: Thriller Noir

PROTAGONIST: Bella

GOAL: To avoid being caught by police

OBSTACLE/S: Her neighbour Alan

WHY THE STORY IS IMPORTANT: It's a character study into what a person is capable of when put under immense pressure.
